For this, I blame The Husband

I am a BC Hydro 'Team Power Smart' member. The Husband is not.

This time last year, I vowed to reduce our power consumption by 15%. For the past 12 months, I've been following The Husband around to shut off lights, unplug plugs and turn off appliances. I've taken many an opportunity to teach him how to use a light switch and to point out that light bulbs don't light rooms that are already lit by daylight. I've even sung 'We are the World' while wearing green and crying for the children.

Today, I was notified that I failed.

We used 6% more power than the year before. When I brought this up with him, he replied "maybe you could have let me know we were doing this and I would have stopped secretly baking cookies and cakes throughout the day." Because secretly baking sweets that you hide from your pregnant wife is a good thing.

So, world, I'm making this failure public. His failure public. If you happen to see The Husband on one of our weekly farmer's market shopping trips or when he's helping out the Green Party, you'll know that he doesn't really care - it just looks that way. I give you permission to shake your head at him and look away in shame. If you can manage it, throw in an audible sigh.

Maybe, with your help, he'll make it up to me by building a cool balcony composter. Just sayin'.
